The Final Countdown

As you may or may not be aware, we have had to change plans regarding the future of ArchonRO. Due to Heimdall's recent health issues, he will be unable to take over administration of the server. While my financial situation has improved, it is clear that I will be unable to contribute financially towards the future of ArchonRO. A more critical factor is time; with recent events, I will need to focus my energy away from external projects and towards my home and loved ones. Unfortunately, this means our services cannot continue beyond the end of the month. I would like to continue to host the forums in some capacity, so the community doesn't completely die out and we all still have a means to gather, communicate, and play other games. I will do my best to find alternate hosting by the end of the month for the forums. Due to the turbulence of life right now, I can't guarantee there won't be downtime, but I will do my best to avoid it.

Don't worry, your hard-fought data won't just disappear. I will back up all databases before we go offline. I will also keep the possibility open for someone else to host ArchonRO, but due to the age of our database and our users' security, I can't just hand it over without assurances. I will post later on requirements for assuming control of the server, but please realize that these requirements will be incredibly stringent. I don't mean to be onerous about it, but I would rather see the whole thing go into the Great Beyond than end up being mishandled, a password list being released, or any other number of disasters. Also, any new potential host will need to outline at least a six month plan to keep the game online. It hurts enough that we are going offline, but the endeavor will fail even more miserably with unreliable hosting attempts.

I cannot express how sorry I am it has come to this. You guys have been some of the most understanding, kind and gracious players any admin can ask for. While I don't regret this decision as it has become unquestionably necessary, I do regret being unable to care for and work on our server as much as you all deserved. I thank you for all your well-wishing and patience with us over the years.

Despite my tongue-in-cheek title and tagging, this doesn't have to be the end; I hope to be able to keep our ties strong in other games in every format. If ArchonRO goes down permanently, I will officially open the forum rules to allow organization on other private servers and an entire board dedicated to it. I may do so anyway, depending on circumstances. I will also release all bans aside from those due to illegal activity, and anyone who would like to return to the community can do so with a clean slate and no grudges.

I wouldn't ask you to name a guild after Archon, but I hope some of you may be inspired to gather under a banner and forge ahead in different games and communities. This community has never been about myself or Heimdall, or even about ArchonRO itself. It's always been about our connections to each other and their strength. Don't let those connections go.

Hate to see the place die, but I'd rather your real life take precedence. Actually, that goes for all of you at Castle Mateo (as I shall call it at the moment). You guys worry about yourselves - the community you guys hosted and established will not disintigrate. Even though several of us moved on in one form or another over a year ago, we're still hanging out together on a regular basis. Hell, we don't even all play the same games and we hang out...

The end of one story is always the start of another, even if it dosen`t seam like it. Perhaps the next story will be one of Ragnarock, perhaps not for some people.

Archon has been an amaseing experence for all of us, though,  (allthough I didn't want to be a fatalist) I knew that It was going to end someday. The phisical/monatary stress that you put on yourself, as well as the (censored)-free community was to good to be true.

Though,  "The Archon Gameing Network" is not just ARO. We have a steam group ( I think), Quite a few of us play XBL, and we're all RPG'ers. The community will survive this, and end up on MSN at the very worst. (I should go reinstall MSN, now that I think about it.)

Server-wise, There are a few Tech-savy people here (Myself not included) who can probably figure out how to Administrate a server in your absence, as for financial costs, we can all donate to the new administrator. There will still be freeloaders, yes, but with a community like this, I'm sure we could  All spare an extra 10 bucks a week for the good of everyone.


Even if ARO goes down forever, I can see all of us reforming on another server (As a few of us already have), or ,hell, ended up on some random WOW P-server out there.

I feel I should note that this game and community have helped me forge not only all of my strongest internet friends, but also a fair number of the friends I hang out with in person on a daily basis. As totally lame as I feel saying this, the community you and Heimdall gave us was probably the most influential thing to happen in my teenage years. I just want you to know how much I appreciate the fact you've kept it going this long even though you've obviously been too busy for it for years.

I and everyone here at Leg Bus give Heimdall our best wishes, though honestly, I doubt a man of his constitution has anything to worry about from a little ol' case of the brain cancer...
Actually, scratch that, I give every single one of you my best wishes. There is not one among you I'm not glad to have met.

This game, or rather this SERVER has brought me close to many friends and brought my closer to the one I love. Through the good times AND bad, It's always been hard to walk away from this place. Know that all the oldskool players over here with me are wishing you guys the best.

If anyone does move to another server and get together, be sure to let us all know so this community can stay together.

Heimdall is one tough fella indeed.  deep down I know he can overcome this...even though reading the words "brain cancer" scares the shit out of me.

since this has all gone down as it has...I'm sticking around the forums.  I needed to separate myself from the game, not you guys.

I love you guys.  I can't really take part in another MMO, not easily anyway (I can't seem to keep up with you guys that moved on anyway).  but, I will be here.  and even if I'm less-than-inspired to play, if there's something I could do for this community, I'd do it.

This has been a great experience, I really hate to see it go. I remember when I first started, how bad I was, how angry I got, and how little patience I had. A year and a half later, wow. Just ask 19 about the improvement. All this last year he kept asking me "WHO ARE YOU AND WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO MY ROOMMATE!?!?" Especially grinding Ariel from 84 to 99 in 4 days. As cheesy as it sounds, this game has changed me. I didn't used to be a gamer, now I am. And I have no regrets. I salute you Mat and Heim, for giving us all this wonderful opportunity. I just wish it could end on better terms.

Of all the games i've played over the years this has definatly been one of the best. even if i took a break for a time i always found myself drawn back to the server because i missed the community and having fun with everyone that i new. you just dont make as big of a bond to everyone in the game if it's a huge server. I would also like to mention how you have keep this server up though many years without any donations or fee, it's been a amazing effort you have put in up to this time. i tip my hat to all of you at Castle Mateo.

Hmmm..... I'm sort of speechless really.

I miss everyone already....even through all of the good....and BAD (yea you 19....you're the bad! XD).....It's tough to let Archon go.

My hope is that the forums stay kickin, because for some reason all of you strange people who I've never really met a day in my life all sort of mean something to me, and it would suck not to have random conversation and rant about things (like I'm doing now), etc etc.

At any rate, my prayers go out for Heimdall and best wishes still to Mateo who is still secretly a hero of mine.

ARO has been a pretty big part of my life as well (4-5 years) i really hate to see all my work go down the drain, but i also hate to not have the familiar community to return too after getting bored of other run-of-the-mill MMOs.
 
I will miss all my friends (some are even bigger then my RL friends haha) and im going to miss this server as a whole. i just hope that we can stay together after this. And if the server does make it through, ill definatly be here.

Well, we have alternate forum hosting now. On the downside, it's a cloud hosting arrangement, so some stuff on the forums might act funny. Hopefully not, though.

On the upside, I have also opened all non-aRO related boards to be viewable by Guests, and have removed all bans aside from those associated with direct attack on our servers (hacking, etc.). This should make us a little more friendly to the outside world. I'll also be purging most information about aRO on the boards. I've already turned most of the aRO boards invisible, and they will be sorted/deleted in time.

I am also officially ending the policy against private server advertisement here. You may now talk about or promote any server you wish.

Seriously, if you guys have any friends that would like to participate in the new Thing we have going, bring them! If people weren't participating because of the old Mateo and Heimdall Are Assholes Defense, the old grudges are gone. If people are willing to come back and bury the old hatchets, they are welcome to as long as they didn't steal or hack. Please, just come back if you are serious. We don't need that old negativity right now.
