I guess this has been a long time coming.

As you all know, I've had less and less time to devote to aRO over the past couple of years. It's gotten to the point now that I won't have any time in the forseeable future to pick up the mantle again and fix everything that needs fixing. In addition to this, I've had some recent shake-ups in my personal life that are going to prevent me from being able to continue to pay for the server out-of-pocket. Since I don't have the time to offer anything in exchange for donations or even to properly administrate the server, I'm going to have to call it like I see it on this.

I'm resigning my position, effective immediately. I will do my best to keep everything online as long as I can, but I can only sustain this for about two months before I can't afford to pay for it anymore. During this time, sonar0m will take my place as admin on a temporary basis, with the position open to him if he wants it. It's completely up to him if he would like to continue to support aRO. Please note that I'm not asking him to pay for the server; even with my financial woes I'm still probably doing better than him. That means that if any of you have dedicated server hosting you can offer, please speak up now. Residential services will not work and will only cause problems when many people are on the server. I'd rather the whole thing shut down than to reduce the service to this level. Don't worry about the data on the server... even if we go down for a while, I'll still keep backups of everything so it could be ressurrected at a later date.

I'm sorry it's come to this; I've fought as hard as I could to prevent it. I owe all of you both my apologies and my thanks. You guys will never know how this experience has changed my life or the importance of everyone I've met because of this place. It's hard to let it go, but it's time that I admit that I'm not up to the task of running right now it and hope that someone else can.

Oh no... T_T I really liked this server so much... and I've been getting more and more of my friends to join lately. I really hope it won't go down indefinitely =(

it has been, but it's frustrating nonetheless - as much as anything, in knowing there's not a thing I can do about any of it.  whoever said "where there's a will, there's a way" can shove it.

if everything else fails and the server goes under...will the forums at least remain?

Well there is hope though. Since he said that even if it goes down he's still going to keep backups of all of the data. So at least even if it goes down for awhile we'll still have all of our characters and such if it comes back. Accepting donations might be a good idea if someone is able to set it up.

Also I was wondering that too. Will the forums still be around if the server goes down?

Thanks. Knowing that is a little relieving. At least we will still be able to talk on the forums until the game comes back.

I love the game and all but don't do this if you're not financially able to either. If I'm able to I would donate what little I could towards making the bill a little easier to pay for sure :o

ugh, I've been doing a lot of thinking.

I know you guys have been fighting donations a lot of years.  (yes, I'm bringing that animal back into discussion.)  Mat, you mentioned donations in your post.  seriously, is the only thing holding you back from it now just that you don't have anything to offer in return?

please, for pete's sake.  you've offered us a free service for years.  if you're in trouble, if the server's in trouble, let us help you.  please don't make it this all-or-nothing "one man takes over all server costs or it dies" thing.  some of us at least don't want anything in return, and I'm sure some of us don't need anything in return either and won't be bent out of shape over the fact that you have nothing to offer.

Considering the amount of support this server has, I'm sure getting enough funding to reduce the overall cost won't be overly hard. I personally would be more then willing to take over a portion of the bill if it meant keeping this server alive. And believe me, it's not common seeing me say that about a game.

From what I've heard from a few of the others... I'm pretty sure alot of us here wouldn't mind helping out as much as we can to pay for the server bill.

I wouldn't be able to give much but... if we are allowed I would try to help the best I could.

Yeah, seriously, the only reason I started playing RO was because my friends said, "It's free!"

And I honestly did not think I would be playing this game for this many years.

I wouldn't even think about giving a penny for any other game, but for aRO, I'd be willing to donate some money too.

That's correct. I work at a hosting company, so it's a natural desire on my part. It's actually ironic. Mateo is much more of a web than an app developer or admin (no slight intended) and yet he has ALWAYS been the codemonkey admin. Seeing as how I do that shit for a living I can say I will meet or exceed his mad skillz.
